Iris, Heather and Jess, teachers at the Henry Frost Children’s Program, will be presenting at the national NAEYC conference in Nashville, TN. Their presentation is titled: “Bringing our school outside: Using explicit presentations to support children in nature” and will be held Friday, November 17, 2023 from 08:00 – 09:30 am in the Music City Center room 209B.
While we always valued outdoor play and time in nature, we discovered new ways to be out of doors as we have been prioritizing the outside during the past few years. As a result, our curriculum has taken on a whole new dimension as we push away the boundaries of our school walls and play yard fence. We have learned that weather is to be embraced, the seasons can be understood, and for the first time we realize that it is possible to teach young children completely outdoors. We also learned that we could take our indoor approach, called the Complementary Curriculum Approach, and apply it outside. Teaching children in nature also allows them to experience risks at a young age. But sometimes it can stop a teacher’s heart and make you think “how could I have handled this situation differently?” In this workshop, we will share the method of explicit presentations to teach children how to explore and experience all that nature has to offer in a joyful way. Come to this workshop for practical training to make this happen, so you can say yes!
